You mean that canoe racing is not the same all over the world?

No, it is not. 

Interestingly, throughout most of the world when canoe racing is referred to, the type of racing they are talking about is what we may consider high kneel sprint racing.  In the olympics, there are canoe racing events, but those events are for high kneelers.  Here is a picture of the type of paddling I am referring to:

The traditional type of canoe racing that we know here in North America is often referred to throughout the rest of the world  as "sit and switch" style canoe racing or "Canadian style" canoe racing.
